SFF 2024 Folkform: The Museum of Masonite

2024-01-27 | TAGS: Exhibitions | News

An exhibition of Masonite works from Folkform.

Since establishing Folkform in Stockholm in 2005, designers Anna Holmquist and Chandra Ahlsell have explored Sweden’s industrial heritage through the creation of objects that sit at the intersection of craftsmanship and industry.

This display is a selection from Folkform’s collected works, made using the last of the original hardboards manufactured at a Masonite factory in Rundvik in the north of Sweden. Also featured is The Production Novellas, a publication by Folkform that offers an artistic investigation of material and place, revealing the studio’s in-depth research into material cultures.

Told through the studio’s 15-year collaboration with the now-closed Masonite factory, The Museum of Masonite examines how design can re-connect consumers with industry, craft and local traditions.

The Folkform Museum of Masonite is hosting book readings with a glass of wine on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon at 4pm. C14:42

Artipelag 14 juni 2013 till 21 augusti 2013
Folkform is invited to Artipelag

Designers and architects have traditionally been inspired by nature and used wood as an important design material. Amongst Swedish designers, the popularity of wood has waxed and waned over time – culminating in the hysterical 1970s pine mania, when every kitchen table was made of a thick solid wood top and {---}

untreated pine was the finest one could have. But eventually the world had enough! Wood became just about banned by designers for a pretty a long time. Pine-haters took over. However, now, in the tracks of ecological and environmental awareness, the woods have become accepted again and designers – not just in Sweden but everywhere – have taken wood to new heights. This new wave of wood’s popularity is expressed in this summer’s large design exhibition: One, Two, Tree! – Artipelag’s first all-design exhibition. On nearly 13,000 square feet, we let the woods into the living room, mix high with low, house with milking stool, boats with playhouses, and particleboard with hardwood.

Industrial Intervention

2011-07-01 | TAGS: Exhibitions | News

The exhibition Industrial Intervention started off with a trip to the old glassworks in the Czech countryside. The new pieces explore the collision between mass-produced and handmade articles, where crafts meet industry, the machine meets the hand. Can something new be created when traditional handicraft is incorporated into existing industrial manufacturing processes?
